Disability Advisory Group of Central Alabama

Our Purpose

Disability Advisory Group of Central Alabama is a volunteer group with the general purpose of offering advice on accessibility issues in the Central Alabama area — such as ramps, curb cuts, parking, access to events, etc, as well as coordinating some sports and other events.

VERY IMPORTANT!

We are also trying to gauge the interest level for building a premier facility for use by persons with mobility related disabilities. That facility would potentially include areas for various types of accessible sports, such as wheelchair basketball, wheelchair football, wheelchair rugby, wheelchair soccer, wheelchair tennis, swimming pools including a zero-entry pool, workout room with accessible exercise and strength building equipment and an indoor track for walking. The facility would likely be in the Eastchase or Pike Road area.

Please cast your vote for having this type of facility and offer your thoughts and suggestions:

DAGCA hosted a vendor table at the Disability Expo held in Montgomery on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. Among our members working the table were Jon Morris, Elizabeth Morris, Ben Brewbaker, Robin Irwin, Cindy LaPorte and Richard Haston.

As Expo attendees stopped by the table they were greeted and given more information about DAGCA including its purpose and our website. Attendees were given two brochures with details about DAGCA and encouraged to go to our website and vote for a facility described on the website.

They were also given a brochure that they could fill out with accessibility issues that need correcting in our community.

Jon invited several attendees to try wheelchair tennis, inviting them to tennis lessons later that day at O’Connor Tennis Center, hosted by Dreamcourt. Three new wheelchair users from the expo attended the tennis lessons later that evening, hosted by Jessica Weyreuter and Jonathan Broadway of Dream Court.

It was the first time the three had ever played wheelchair tennis.

As Jessica gave lessons, she made everyone feel very welcome and she encouraged each of the new players as they took tennis lessons and played tennis matches. Thank you, Jessica!

Thank you, Rachel Hughes, for an awesome Expo!
